Photo of Orchard Grass (Dactylis glomerata)
Taken on Jun. 21, 2022
This photo shows a clump of orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) growing in a lawn with other grasses. The orchard grass stands out in its foliage which has a more bluish color than the surrounding grasses, and blades that are long, slightly wider than the other grasses, and gently arching. There is also a single inflorescence with a cluster of flowers that will later develop into seeds.
This species can survive in occasionally-mowed lawns, but usually will be eliminated if the lawn is mowed frequently, especially if the mowing starts early in the spring and continues well into the fall. This species grows primarily during the spring and fall.
