This photo shows the bark of the Norway spruce (Picea abies), a non-native conifer widely planted in North America. This tree often grows to a larger diameter than other spruces. The bark tends to be scaly, breaking into small plates that are roughly round in shape, and showing some weak tendency towards longer vertical cracks on older trees like this one.
