Many gardeners object to goldenrods as being too large and aggressive, but there are numerous goldenrods adapted to drier, harsher habitats that are smaller in size and less aggressive. Pictured here is gray goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis), a delicate plant that does not overwhelm other vegetation, and usually only grows where the soil is too dry and nutrient-poor for there to be much competition.
