This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

This species is also native to western Canada; we have not yet built this portion of its map. Our map may also underestimate the native range of this species in Montana and Utah, due to some problems relating to inconsistent classification of this species in different sources; see the Notes field for further explanation.

Notes

BONAP has merged this species into Lomatium triternatum var. platycarpum (Torr.) Boivin, whereas POWO considers that name to refer to a subspecies, Lomatium triternatum subsp. platycarpum (Torr.) Cronquist, and considers this species, Lomatium simplex, to be a proper species of its own. We have elected to use POWO's classification scheme. However, this led to problems in constructing our maps. It is not 100% clear what populations the USDA range map refers to because they do not list any synonyms under their scientific name. Yet, BONAP considers Lomatium simplex var. leptophyllum to refer to a different taxon, Lomatium triternatum var. platycarpum, whose range extends farther west, outside the range the USDA reports for this species.

We have not yet resolved any of these discrepancies. For now, take our map with a grain of salt; it is based tentantively on the USDA map.
