Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is generally agreed to be native to Mexico south into South America. POWO lists it as native to Texas, but is not listed in most other authorities we consulted. We found, however, numerous preserved specimens from 2002-2010 in the area northwest of Rio Grande City, TX. Our map in TX is based on these records and reflects uncertainty both in whether or not this species is found there (there could perhaps be an issue of misidentification or plants in cultivation) and whether or not it is native. We note that these records are isolated and separated from the native range by a large distance over which this species does not occur. We have yet to build the portion of its map in Mexico.
