Common Hepatica (Hepatica nobilis Schreb.)

There are two distinct taxa of Hepatica native to North America. Some authorities, including BONAP, treat both of them as sub-taxa of this species, Hepatica nobilis, a name initially used to describe Eurasian populations. We follow the convention of FNA, FSUS, and numerous other authorities that treat the two native populations as each their own species, which we call sharp-lobed liverleaf (Hepatica acutiloba) and roundleaf liverleaf (Hepatica americana). Under this scheme, H. nobilis only refers to the taxon native to Eurasia, which is not known to occur anywhere in the wild in North America. Note that some authorities, including POWO, lump the two native taxa together as varieties of H. americana and note also that a number of authorities, including some contemporary ones such as Go Botany, Minnesota Wildflowers, and FNA classify these species in the Anemone genus.
