This closeup of the bark of black cherry (Prunus serotina) shows the transition from the earlier, smoother bark with horizontal markings, to the scaly bark of mature trees. Note the fairly large plate on the left, showing the distinct pattern that is common on young trees. Over time, these features will disappear further and the bark will look mostly scaly, like on the right side of the trunk here.
