This photo shows the trunk of a caucasian spruce (Picea orientalis), also known as an Oriental spruce. The bark is light gray and scaly, but tends to flake off in patches, showing a more reddish color underneath. This species is native to the Caucasus region in Asia, and has been introduced to North America as a landscaping plant, where it generally does not survive in the wild.
