Size Comparison of San Bernardino County, CA with DE, NJ, CT, and RI
Taken on May. 13, 2019
This image, created from public domain maps on Wikimedia commons, shows a size comparison of San Bernardino County, CA with four east coast states: Delaware, New Jersey, Conneceticut, and Rhode Island. This one county is larger in area than all four states combined! The same county has more area than each of the nine smallest states in the U.S.
The inconsistency in size of politically-defined regions like states and counties is one of the many problems with using these regions as a unit of study for tracking plant distribution. We include this image and explore these issues in greater depth on our blog post using ecoregions over political boundaries.
