Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is native to Mexico and Cuba, but is also found in Florida and Alabama, separated from the native range by large distances over which it does not occur. Although BONAP reports it as native to Florida, all other sources we consulted including POWO, FSUS, FNA, and Florida Plant Atlas report it as introduced there, and because these records seem more up-to-date in this particular case, we defer to their status in this region. We also note that the first report of it in the state is from 1950 in spite of the fact that the species was described in 1860 and there are numerous earlier records in both Mexico and Cuba. We have yet to build the portion of the range map in Mexico.
