Introduced or Not Present |
This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 4 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is native to southern Europe and is widely cultivated. BONAP, POWO, and FNA report it as introduced in California, but we were only able to locate a single record, from 1976 in a garden in Los Angeles, so it is not even clear whether this was truly a wild population. It seems unlikely that this species would not have been reported more, given that it is fairly distinctive and showy, if it indeed had established sustaining populations here. We report the CA record as dubious and tentatively report that this species may not occur in the wild here in North America.
