Guard Withe (Bignonia aequinoctialis L.)

Also classified as Cydista aequinoctialis (L.) Miers.

Some popular sources consider these names to be a synonym of Mansoa alliacea, commonly called "garlic vine", a species in the same family which bears some superficial resemblance, but which all authorities we suggested treat as distinct. We have not been able to identify the source of this confusion, but it could be that an older source confused or misapplied the name and the error has propagated in popular sources. Mansoa alliacea does not occur in North America.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is native to Mexico, Cuba, and southward but it has been introduced in Florida. We have yet to build the portion of its range map in Mexico.
