Leafy Willowherb (Epilobium ravenii Hoch & Gandhi)

Also classified as Epilobium foliosum (Torr. & A. Gray) Suksd.

Older sources refer to this species as Epilobium foliosum (Torr. & A. Gray) Suksd. (1900), but this name has been deemed illegitimate, probably because the name was already used (1841 and 1842) to refer to specimens which have now been deemed to belong to other species. However, this renaming is recent (2022) and most sources still refer to this taxon as Epilobium foliosum (Torr. & A. Gray) Suksd. In this case the specification of author is important because there name Epilobium foliosum has been used by five different authors to refer to different specimens which refer to four different species.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is also native to British Columbia; we have not yet built this portion of its range. It has also been collected from Guadalupe Island, off the coast of Mexico, but outside the scope of our site. That population may have been extirpated.
