Big Trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus Cav.)

Also classified as Lotus uliginosus Schkuhr.

BONAP uses the name Lotus uliginosus Schkuhr. (1796) in spite of it being newer than Lotus pedunculatus Cav. (1793), for unknown reasons. Many older sources use the name ulignosus, but in this case BONAP has gone out of their way to use a different name than USDA PLANTS originally used. At any rate, all sources we cite seem to refer to this taxon consistently, at least for North America. Sources that use the term Lotus uliginosus may exclude the subspecies Lotus pedunculatus subsp. granadensis, instead separating it as Lotus granadensis Chrtková, but that taxon is only found in Morocco and Spain and does not occur in North America.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species has also been introduced in Canada; we have yet to build its map.
