This species is native to the central US and Mexico, west to NM and CO; it has been introduced in California and we mark these populations introduced, not Expanded because they are separated by large distances and major geographic divides. We have yet to build the portion of its map in Mexico.

We recommend against the use of the common name "fineleaved nassella" as it references its scientific name; such names can cause confusion if the species is later moved to another genus. This species has already been reclassified once, from the Stipa genus; horticultural circles often still refer to it by that name, reflecting the general trend of slow to absorb new scientific information.
