Field Restharrow (Ononis arvensis L.)
Also classified as Ononis spinosa subsp. hircina (Jacq.) Gams.
Some authorities consider this a subspecies of spiny restharrow (Ononis spinosa), alternatively naming it ssp. hircina (more commonly), or ssp. arvensis; some consider it a variety, var. arvensis, and alternatively other authors have considered it a subspecies or variety of numerous other Ononis species. We follow POWO's scheme which seems to be in harmony with most but not all modern authorities.

This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 4 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species has been reported three times in the 1910's, on ballast in Portland, OR, and not since. BONAP shows it introduced in NY state but with no county, and NY Plant Atlas does not list it. However this as species is sometimes treated as a subspecies of O. spinosa, we suspect the NY record may correspond to non-naturalized records of O. spinosa collected in Monroe County, NY. VASCAN reports this species (which it calls Ononis spinosa subsp. hircina) as introduced in Alberta, but we could not find a specific location so we do not show this part of its range.
