Habitat

Found on streambanks of the Saint John River along the border of New Brunswick and Maine, and into Maine to just past the confluence with the Big Black River, on unstable, eroding streambanks that experience ice scouring in winter and flooding in spring. Found in partly shaded conditions.

This species is endangered and threatened by habitat loss from development, forestry, and recreational use. Its existence was a factor in opposing the proposed Dickey-Lincoln dam, which was never built.
