Introduced but Eliminated

This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species, native to Europe, has only been reported from a few isolated collections, in Massachusetts and Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia. It was introduced to Labrador as well, but did not persist there. It is more widely planted in gardens but rarely survives in the wild.

Uses

This species is occasionally planted in gardens. Although some Potentilla species have become invasive in North America, this one probably has low invasive potential because it has rarely established in the wild and where it does, it does not dominate.

We still recommend avoiding planting it; at best, it still takes up space in a garden that could be used for native plants. And there are cases of plants being used for decades in gardening before eventually becoming invasive later on.
