Introduced but Eliminated |
This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is native to Europe; POWO does not list this species as occurring anywhere in North America, but BONAP and USDA PLANTS show it as introduced in Quebec. We found a single 1935 record from Montreal. VASCAN lists it as "Extirpated", a category they usually only use for native plants, but we suspect this may be in error since the pattern of distribution of this plant (not being native to any coastal areas anywhere near Canada) is such that it would be unusual for it to be native to Montreal. As such we report it as "Introduced but Eliminated".
↑Notes
We recommend against the use of the common name "European scopolia" because, although the descriptor "European" is accurate, the name "scopolia" references the scientific genus of this plant, and such common names can become misleading in the case that a species is reclassified into a different genus. As plants of this genus is sometimes referred to as "bell" or "belladonna", accurately describing the hanging, bell-shaped flowers, the name "Henbane bell" seems a better choice.
