This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

↑Notes

None of the widely-used common names for this species is ideal. We have stuck with "oakleaf mountain ash" because it is most widely-used. Although the species does have a leaf shape superficially resembling oaks, it has been moved from the Sorbus (mountain ash) genus into the Hedlundia genus. Similarly, the descriptor "whitebeam" usually refers to trees of the Aria genus. As the Hedlundia genus is thought to originate as cross-genus hybrids between Aria and Sorbus, it makes some sense, but is also somewhat misleading to refer to them by either name. The descriptors "Finnish" and "Swedish" are both good, as the tree is native to both Sweden and Finland. The term "service-tree" is similarly misleading; it frequently refers to the Sorbus genus as well, and can also refer to Torminalis glaberrima, which occurs in Europe but not North America.
