False Mayweed (Tripleurospermum maritimum (L.) W.D.J. Koch)

BONAP recognizes three subspecies of this species occurring in North America: ssp. phaeocephalum, ssp. maritimum, and ssp. inodorum. Of these, POWO only includes one, ssp. maritimum, in this species. They consider ssp. phaeocephalum a species of its own, Hooker's false mayweed (Tripleurospermum hookeri); that species does not use the epithet phaeocephalum because the name with that epithet was much newer (1961) than the name with hookeri (1853); we find this scenario unfortunate because the epithet phaeocephalum is in many respect better as it is more descriptive and also corresponds to the name in the widely-used subspecies treatment. Similarly, they treat ssp. inodorum as its own species: scentless false mayweed (Tripleurospermum inodorum). We split the three taxa, following POWO's treatment. In this scheme, the subspecies other than ssp. maritima do not occur in North America, so for our purposes, BONAP's map of that species corresponds to this taxon.

This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is native to Greenland and Iceland, but has been introduced in North America.
