American Sweetflag (Acorus americanus (Raf.) Raf.)

Page contents

Summary

A wetland plant, native to North America.

It is difficult to get accurate information about this plant's range, because of inconsistency in reporting of this species relative to the introduced Acorus calamus.

Many populations are locally endangered, and listed as endangered in Pennsylvania.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Habitat

Shallow water in ponds.

Related to the introduced Acorus calamus, which is much more common in much of this species' range. Some sources do not distinguish the two plants, which can make it hard to find accurate info about either species.
