Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This small weedy plant can spread aggressively. The main source of its spread is through contaminated pasture seed. It also can colonize open woodlands, riparian areas, cropland, gardens, roadsides, and other disturbed ground. It has expanded slightly beyond its native range in Florida but it is uncommon and spotty in most of this range, perhaps because of its preference for climates with pronounced wet and dry seasons, conditions mostly limited to Florida.
