This plant is cultivated in gardens, but is also a weedy plant that readily colonizes disturbed areas. As such it has established in numerous areas outside its native range. It was unclear where to label the plant expanded vs. introduced. Some populations, such as in western Nebraska, are clearly expanded, whereas others, such as Massachussets, are clearly introduced, but for others, such as those in Alabama, Illinois, or Michigan, the cutoff is less clear.

The eastern populations are separated from the ones in the central US by large distances. Some of the populations into Michigan are also isolated, but not by as large distances, which is why we marked them as expanded. Regardless of how it is labeled, this plant is expanding into new areas far from its native range, and may function somewhat like an invasive species in new portions of its range, hindering other vegetation through allelopathy.
