This species is often treated by older authorities as a variety of Holboell's rockcress (Boechera holboellii), typically as Arabis holboellii var. retrofracta, less commonly as Boechera holboellii var. secunda. We follow the treatment of POWO, which is accepted by BONAP and NSE, which separates this taxon into its own species.
