Introduced or Not Present

This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

FSUS marks all of these introductions as waifs, meaning that they formed only transient naturalized populations and did not persist in the wild. However, BONAP shows them as introductions, not waifs. POWO does not even report this species occurring in North America.

This species is closely related to the Osage-orange (Maclura pomifera), which is native to North America but had died out to a small range, and then expanded due to widespread planting by humans following European colonization. No other Maclura species occur in North America.

Notes

We recommend against the use of the common name "Chinese mulberry" as that more frequently is used to refer to the species Morus australis, and it is also misleading as this species is not in the Morus genus which most mulberries belong to.
