This plant may be spread to new areas by waterfowl, or both accidentally or intentionally by humans. It has also spread to other continents, including Hawaii and New Zealand, through contaminating seed mixes. There is some debate about which of the isolated eastern populations are native vs. introduced. We have used BONAP's scheme as a starting point. We mark the Wisconsin population as expanded because of proximity to the native range in Michigan's upper peninsula.
