This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This hybrid is native to Japan and is occasionally planted in gardens. It has established in the wild only in one county of Massachusetts.
↑Uses
This species is occasionally grown in gardens, where it is used as a ground cover. It is valued for being generally easy to grow and tolerating a range of adverse conditions, including browsing by rabbits and deer, drought, heavy shade, and shallow or eroding soil.
Although this species is not considered invasive, it has established in the wild and we recommend against planting it. There are numerous other native species suitable for growing in similar conditions.
↑Notes
Although we did not find any records of the common name "Young's bishop's hat", this species, along with other Epimedium sp., is often called "bishop's hat" and the descriptor "Young's" is often attached when it is called "Young's barrenwort", with barrenwort being another common name for the genus; the descriptor "Young's" also matches the scientific epithet youngianum.
