Although this species is native to Mexico, we have marked it as "Introduced" rather than "Expanded" into the continental U.S. because it is widely cultivated in gardens and promoted through the horticultural industry, and seems to be establishing from cultivated populations rather than spreading from wild populations. There are also numerous isolated populations, separated from each other by geographic divides, and globally, there is a pattern of this species behaving like an invasive species in a number of other areas where it has been introduced.
