↑Habitat

Found on rocky slopes, rock outcroppings, and dry upper banks of streams. Mostly limited to the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas and Oklahoma, with a few isolated populations in northwestern Arkansas in the Ozarks.

It is not clear what factors limite this species distribution in the wild; it is unusual in the contrast between its uncommon nature and restricted range in the wild, and its ease of growing in gardens.

↑Uses

This plant is only occasionally grown in gardens, but due to its restricted range and being uncommon in its native range, it is much more common and widespread as a garden specimen than it is in the wild.

It is valued for its flowers, its soft foliage, attracting butterflies, and being relatively easy to grow in gardens and resistant to deer browsing.
