Betony-leaved Greeneyes (Berlandiera betonicifolia (Hook.) Small)

Also known as Texas greeneyes; also classified as Berlandiera ×betonicifolia.

Some sources, including BONAP, treat this as a hybrid between Texas greeneyes (Berlandiera texana) and soft greeneyes (Berlandiera pumila), whereas others, such as POWO, treat it as a separate species. USDA PLANTS lumps this in with Texas greeneyes (Berlandiera texana) whereas most authorites separate them. We follow POWO's treatment which separates them and treats each as a species.

↑Notes

We coined the new common name betony-leaved greeneyes because this species lacked a common name distinct from Texas greeneyes (Berlandiera texana) and the use of the same common name was misleading. Our common name is based on the scientific epithet betonicifolia which refers to leaves resembling those of the Betonica genus, typically referred to by the common name "Betony". We found this a good name because it coincides with the scientific name, is unambiguous, and also descriptive, as the leaves of this species do superficially resemble the most well-known member of that genus, common hedgenettle (Betonica officinalis).
