Many common names are in use for this species and we found none to be dominant. We prefer the name "feathertop reed grass" because the common name "reed grass" is frequently used to refer to plants of the Calamagrostis genus, and the seedheads of this grass do have a feather-like appearance, so the name seems descriptive. None of the common names correspond to the scientific epithet epigejos, meaning "epigeous" (germinating above the ground.)
