This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This natural hybrid is native to the NW Balkan Peninsula, but has been widely cultivated and has escaped into the wild on many continents. BONAP's map for this species shows serious deficiencies that lead us to question its accuracy, notably, reporting this species as occurring in all counties in Indiana but in few counties of surrounding states. There is also a strange discrepancy between reports in northern Louisiana and an absence of reports in ecologically-similar counties of southern Arkansas. Our ecoregion-based map mostly smooths out these issues but because we did consult BONAP to construct our map we note that there may be some problems with the map for this species. This species is also introduced in Canada but we have yet to build this portion of its map.
