This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
The exact native range of this species is not known. It is widely agreed to be native to the neotropics. BONAP marks it as adventive from Louisiana Eastward, whereas FSUS treats it as native to South Florida, introduced northeast of there, and possibly native or introduced between Peninsular florida and the South Texas coastal plain. Regardless of the extent of its original native range, this is a weedy plant that has expanded its range, taking advantage of the greater disturbance and open habitats modern humans maintain. We have yet to build the portion of the map in Mexico.
