Parish's Oxytheca (Acanthoscyphus parishii (Parry) Small)
Also classified as Oxytheca parishii Parry.
↑Habitat
Found in dry, rocky slopes of Southern California's Mountains, mostly the Transverse Ranges. Four varieties are recognized which alternatively grow in slightly different habitats, including chaparral, steep talus slopes of limestone, on sandy and gravely soil, and one variety so rare its habitat preferences are less well-known.
↑Life Cycle
This species is an annual conducting most photosynthesis in winter but flowering in summer.
The plant initially grows a rosette of leaves over the winter, when water is more available. In spring, as temperatures warm and water begins to become more scarce, the plant begins growing upright, producing a leafless stem that produces flowers some time between June and August. The plant then produces seeds and dies.
