Velvetseed Milkwort (Hebecarpa obscura (Benth.) J.R.Abbott)

Also known as Huachuca mountain milkwort; also classified as Polygala obscura Benth., Polygala piliophora S.F. Blake.

Some sources, including USDA PLANTS, BONAP, and NSE, treat Huachuca Mountain Milkwort (Polygala piliophora S.F. Blake) as a separate species, but POWO lumps it in with this one and does not even recognize it as a sub-taxon. Most of the authorities treating those populations as a separate species do not recognize the separation of this and related species out of the Polygala genus and into Hebecarpa, but BONAP does for most species, which is why we are puzzled at the absence of a name Hebecarpa piliophora. We follow POWO's treatment of merging these taxon under this name.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is also native to a broad range throughout Mexico; we have yet to build this portion of its map.
