Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is widely agreed to be native to South and Central America, with a spotty distribution from southeast Mexico southward. BONAP marks it as adventive in the US, but FSUS reports it as "probably native" everywhere from TX to SC, with a non-persistent record from Maryland. Our map is based on FSUS' assertion. We have yet to build the portion of our map in Mexico.
