Also classified as Prenanthes barbata (Torr. & A. Gray) Milstead, Prenanthes serpentaria var. barbata (Torr. & A.Gray) A.Gray.

A specimen was described 1884 as a variety of cankerweed (Nabalus serpentaria), but is generally-agreed upon to actually belong to this species and not that one; we did not find any sources that disagree.
