Richardson's Willow (Salix richardsonii Hook.)

POWO treats this taxon as a subspecies of Salix lanata: Salix lanata ssp. richardsonii, but virtually all other authorities we consulted treat it as a separate species, including FNA, BONAP, USDA PLANTS, Vascan, and iNaturalist, along with most material derived from those sources. Furthermore, POWO reports S. lanata ssp. lanata as occurring in Canada, with an identical range to ssp. richardsonii, which contradicts all other information we have found and looks like it is probably an error. No other sources report S. lanata occurring anywhere in North America. As such we have rejected POWO's treatment of these taxa, at least for now, and kept this species as separate.
