Whiplash Saxifrage (Saxifraga flagellaris Willd. ex Sternb.)

Also known as broadsepal saxifrage; also classified as Saxifraga platysepala (Trautv.) Tolm. (= ssp. platysepala).

POWO recognizes four subspecies of this one. USDA PLANTS considers ssp. platysepala to be its own species, Saxifraga platysepala, but we follow POWO's treatment. This merge does not affect our range map since that taxon does not occur in the lower 48 US.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species has a wide native range extending from western and northern Canada into Greenland, through Alaska and into north Asia and beyond. We have yet to build the portion of its range map in Canada and Alaska.
