Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This small weedy plant spreads readily through its seeds that stick to clothing and animal fur. Its exact native range is not known, and subject to considerable disagreement, but it is generally agreed to be native to the tropical Americas and expanding its range northward. Some sources assert that there were some native populations in the continental U.S. but even these agree that it has expanded far beyond its native range. We mark the entire range in the US as expanded, per BONAP.
