Manila Grass (Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr.)

Also classified as Zoysia pacifica (Goudsw.) M.Hotta & Kuroki (=Zoysia matrella var. pacifica Goudsw.).

BONAP recognizes Zoysia pacifica as a separate species, but we treat it as a variety of this species, Zoysia matrella var. pacifica Goudsw., per POWO's treatment.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

Uses

This species is used as a turfgrass in the warmer parts of the US, particularly the south, and sometimes in California. We recommend avoiding it because it has invasive potential; it has escaped into the wild in a number of regions, and seems to be most aggressive in south Florida.
