Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is occasionally planted in gardens, and can escape from cultivation. There is uncertainty as to its exact native range. BONAP reports the eastern portion of this species range, from Alabama eastward, as adventive. Weakley's FSUS reports it as native to the coastal plain north to SC, and introduced only in NC and the Piedmont. We report these populations as expanded because, regardless of where you draw the lines, new populations are contiguous with the native range.
