Note that although the range map shows a native population in the Appalachians, this is Acmispon americanus var. helleri, an uncommon variety which is not expanding into new areas; new populations consist of the more abundant, Western Acmispon americanus var. americanus spreading eastward. We mark it as expanded even though the populations consist of isolated populations, because this is a small weedy plant that is not generally cultivated, and there are enough new populations to see a pattern of spread.
