Glossy Abelia (Linnaea ×grandiflora (Rovelli ex André) Christenh.)

Also classified as Abelia ×grandiflora (Rovelli ex André) Rehder.

This hybrid was reclassified into the Linnaea genus, which formerly contained only one species, in part of a proposed reclassification of most of the members of the Abelia genus into this genus. Although not all authorities have accepted this reclassification, we have, both because it incorporates newer genetic research, and it fixes the prolem of the former Abelia genus not being monophyletic.

This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This artificial hybrid may have also established in the wild in Mexico but we have yet to find any verified records of it doing so. If you know of such records, please contact us.

Uses

This hybrid was developed by the horticulture industry, and is widely used in landscaping.

It is valued for being generally easy to grow in warmer subtropical areas, and tolerating soil erosion.

Although it is not currently considered invasive, its use is best avoided because its parents are both native to East Asia and introduced in North America, and it has demonstrated potential to establish in the wild in a range of different conditions, so it may have invasive potential.

Notes

Although this hybrid is not known to occur in the wild, and originated through the horticulture industry, it has established in the wild in North America.
