Introduced or Not Present

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is native to Guatemala, Honduras, and Southeast Mexico; it has been introduced in Arizona. We have not yet built the portion of its range map in Mexico.

Notes

We recommend the common name "Guatemalan Teosinte" even though it is least widely used, because it is most accurate and least ambiguous: this species is native to Guatemala and not Florida. The name "maíz de monte", outside the US, is most frequently used to refer to ferns in the Marattiaceae family, particularly of the Marattia genus. Although none of these occur in North America, it is worthwhile to avoid this ambiguous common name as they are common through Central America.
