Although the USDA uses the term "American skunkcabbage", this name is actually more widely-used in the UK and Ireland, where it accurately conveys that this species is native to the Americas. However, in North America it is misleading because there are two species of Skunk Cabbage and this has the more restricted range of the two, so we prefer the common name "Western Skunk Cabbage" to distinguish it from eastern skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus).
