Big Red Sage (Salvia penstemonoides Kunth & Bouché)

Also classified as Salvia pentstemonoides Kunth & C.D.Bouché (Misspelling).

Some authors insist on sticking to the misspelling Salvia pentstemonoides out of an appeal to the rules of taxonomic naming, because the original description was misspelled in this way. We have chosen to use the correct spelling for multiple reasons. The correct spelling is in more widespread use in the scholarly literature. Furthermore the misspelling is inconsistent with other scientific names, including both the Penstemon genus, and other epithets, for instance Aliciella penstemonoides. The isolated inconsistency in the epithet of this species can be confusing and can make it harder to search for this species' name; we prefer the practice of cleaning up errors and improving the internal consistency of naming schemes, over the practice of allowing errors and confusing inconsistencies to persist in the interest of technical "correctness".
