Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is thought to be most closely related to the Sarvis holly (Ilex amelanchier), which does not overlap with it in range. Several other Ilex species overlap with it in range.

Notes

This species was formerly classified in its own genus, as Nemopanthus mucronatus, but more recent research has reclassified it into the Ilex genus.
