This tentative map is based on the FHWA's ERA. This data lacks information on Canada, but also overestimates native ranges, especially around the edges, as this post explains. We have not yet reviewed or fixed this map.

This species is thought to be most closely related to the Sarvis holly (Ilex amelanchier), which does not overlap with it in range. Several other Ilex species overlap with it in range.

Notes

This species was formerly classified in its own genus, as Nemopanthus mucronatus, but more recent research has reclassified it into the Ilex genus.
