This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

↑Habitat

Found in pond shores in the coastal plain of Massachussets and Rhode Island, where it is rare. Its populations and vigor fluctuates year to year, doing best in years where the water level is lower than normal in the wetlands where it occurs.

↑Life Cycle

Eupatorium novae-angliae is a perennial; it is male-sterile, producing no pollen, and thus spreads only through rhizomes or agamospermy (asexual seed production.)

We searched for but did not find any research establishing whether or not it was possible for this species to be fertilized by pollen from either parent species.

↑Notes

Genetic analysis has shown that this species originated as a hybrid of swamp justiceweed (Eupatorium paludicola) and common boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum). However, even though it is a sterile hybrid, it has persisted in habitats where E. paludicola is not presently found, far from its range, and its range no longer overlaps with that parent.
